February 2004

We stopped in Nagano on our way back from Myoko-kogen.

Famous for having hosted the Olympic Games in 1998, Nagano has reverted to a pleasant, quite small city of 350'000 inhibitants. However, still 4 millions persons visit every year the Zenko-ji temple, which is believed to have been founded in the 7th century, making it one of the oldest in Japan. The popularity of this temple comes probably from its liberal acceptance of believers from different Buddhist sects.
