Fernando de Noronha

Introduction

Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, 350 km offshore from the Brazilian coast. There is one main island, from which the group gets its name. Fernando de Noronha is considered the best scuba diving place in Brazil, and is registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

    North Point of Fernado de Noronha. The dive takes place around Rata Island. Saw a stingray, several turtles and schools of reef fish. A cloud of sardines so big it blocked the sun's light underwater... Beautiful dive.

    Dive located on part of Rata Island. A rocky mass forming a drop-off between 18 and 39 meters. Very few colors due to lack of corals. Very few fish. Saw two large reef sharks.

    Current and surf. Ground composed of stones, sand and algae. Poor visibility due to high concentration of particles. Seen: large barracudas and a stingray buried in the sand. Lots of reef fish. Small hard corals in formation.

    Stony, grassy soil. Rock formations almost reaching the surface. Strong surf. Lots of grass in suspension. Poor visibility. Hard and soft corals, but still quite scattered. Lots of fish. Saw a large moray eel and a turtle.

    Sandy bottom - limestone and algae. Many passages in tunnels and chimneys between rock formations. Large cavern in which we came face to face with an imposing stingray.

    Poor visibility. Strong current, backwash. Two rock formations with a wall up to 40 meters high. Sandy bottom strewn with seaweed between the two rock formations. Corals are forming in some parts of the rock. Very few fish. Saw a turtle and a few barracudas.

    Monotonous relief. Virtually no corals. Saw three nurse sharks and several turtles, including one of phenomenal size. The sea was very rough on this dive.

    Pinnacle surrounded by rocks, crossed by a 10-metre tunnel. Nothing interesting to see, except a stingray and a nurse shark. No coral. Rough sea which make it difficult to jump in the water and return to the boat. Litterally 4-meter waves were encountered.

    Diving on the sheltered side of the island (leeward) on a rocky bottom, with no coral. The only thing of interest at 15 meters is a large cave some 20 meters long and 5 meters high. At the bottom of the cave, a narrow chimney allows the diver to climb three meters. Saw two large barracudas, a nurse shark and two reef sharks. Also saw an eel garden. Lots of coral.
