Martinique

Introduction

Martinique is obviously not famous for its deep-sea diving. Apart from a few sites, the general quality is rather disappointing. As is often the case, it would be an error to go there for diving. But to go there and not dive would also be a mistake! The biggest problem of the island is the powerful trade-union of the fishermen. The places where one meets the most beautiful specimens are... in the cages being used to catch them! Thus, one could see in these cages in a single dive parrot-fish, angels and even morays! Due to the disgraceful passivity of the authorities with respect to the destruction of one of the island's riches, diving is not - and never will be - enthralling in Martinique.

Diving Sites

  • rating : 4.0
    Nahoun
    rating : 4.0
    type of diving : wreck
    depth : 35 m
    description :
Sailing ship (with engine) sunk there less than 3 years ago, Nahoun is in very good condition, lying on its skittle at 35 meters deep, with a mast at a depth of only 12 meters. It is possible to enter in the wreck, either by the stairs or by the sides. An enormous lobster was seen during this dive.

  • rating : 4.0
    Rocher du Diamant
    rating : 4.0
    depth : 15 m
    visibility : 20 m
    description :
To the south, an atypical sight: at 1 kilometer from the shore emerges a rock rising at 176 meters. A diving site with canyons, chimneys and caves. Probably the best place on the island for fish, which remain, however, small. To the east, one will find a coral plateau.

  • rating : 2.0

Average visibility and very strong current! A lot of large sea-urchin... and some fish in fishermen's cages (including morays)... No other comment (look at the top of this page)!

At 100 meters of shore, many wrecks sunk during the great volcanic eruption of 1902, among them the Dahlia and Diamant, that broke in pieces. Bad visibility ruins the diving...
