Belize

Introduction

Small country located between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize, independent since 1981, is particularly famous for its coral islands located in the Caribbean Sea: Turneffe Islands and Ambergis Caye; this last island can be joined in the plane, since the flight takes only 20 minutes between Belize City and San Pedro. What was, a long time ago, a refuge for pirates is today visited by divers from all around the world, since one finds in this country some of the most famous dive sites in the world.

    comments :
Because of certain customers, the boats tend to leave late regularly. In the morning, two dives are made from the boat (with a return at the hotel between the two). When the diving takes place in the reserve, a fee of 5-10 Belize must be paid... but it is worth it.
Truly a great diving shop, with a very friendly owner.

    comments :
The SunBreeze Beach is perfectly well located, directly on the shore. However, there is no direct access to the beach in front of the hotel. Rooms are very large and comfortable (air conditioning, television).

The negative points are related to the restaurant Rasta Pasta and the bar between the sea and the swimming pool: although being very well located, they offer the disadvantage to employ workers who try to steal the customers.

Very close to the hotel SunBreeze, this restaurant proposes excellent food, very interesting prices and helpful staff. Do not miss the breakfast there.

Diving Sites

  • rating : 4.0
    Amigo's Wreck
    rating : 4.0
    type of diving : wreck
    depth : 27 m
    visibility : good
    description :
The wreck of this site is, in itself, of no interest. However, just after entering the water, nurse-sharks approached us, and keep swimming around the wreck. They even were not reluctant to be touched! Also lots of fish (bigeye trevally, groupers). The corals are also interesting.

  • rating : 4.0
    Blue Hole
    rating : 4.0
    depth : 46 m
    visibility : good
    description :
The journey between the SunBreeze Beach Hotel and the Blue Hole lasts approximately 3.5 hours: the departure is thus arranged at 6h00. Impressive and huge are two of the adjectives that characterize the best this mythical diving site, one of the most famous in the world. Located off the east coast of Belize, in the center of Lighthouse Reef, the Blue Hole is an enormous perfectly circular hole with a diameter of 300 meters and a depth of 23 meters. Formerly, this place was a dry cave before being submerged at the glacial era. The ceiling finally broke down, leading to the actual landscape.
The Blue Hole is known for its famous stalactites and stalagmites, some of which reach 8 meters long! They were discovered by Cousteau in 1972. Unfortunately, they are located very deeply and thus difficult to access. This is, as well as the remote location, the main problem: the diving is really interesting only from 40 meters, where the visibility is good, even if the water is a little cooler... Finally note that there are no fish on this site.
Addition: a reader informed us that he saw, on this site, reef sharks and a barracuda.

    Eagle Rays Canyon
    rating : 4.0
    depth : 20 m
    visibility : good
    description :
Diving along the reef, with several parallel canyons. This site is exceptionally rich in fish: even two large groupers followed us during the dive… 2 turtles have also been seen.

  • rating : 4.0
    Half Moon Caye
    rating : 4.0
    depth : 20 m
    visibility : excellent
    description :
An impressive dive in a natural reserve: the reef is shaped with canyons, through which the divers can easily pass. The soft corals are in excellent state (one finds many sponges on the site). Along the vertiginous wall, the usual reef fauna is present, with lots of parrots. We also could observe a stingray.

    Lighthouse Reef
    rating : 4.0
    depth : 20 m
    visibility : excellent
    description :
One of the traditional dives of this area, very similar to Half Moon Caye, although we probably saw even more fish here!

  • rating : 4.0
    Pillar Coral
    rating : 4.0
    depth : 20 m
    visibility : good
    description :
Reef with several parallel canyons. A very interesting fauna, with 1 nurse-shark and an impressive school of 11 spotted eagle rays. Moreover, a lot of reef fishes and a large grouper

    Love Tunnels
    rating : 3.0
    depth : 25 m
    visibility : average
    description :
Very beautiful scenery: many tunnels can be explored and when the sun shines, the colors are splendid. A turtle, some fish and 2 large lobsters.

  • rating : 3.0
    Tackle Box Canyons
    rating : 3.0
    depth : 30 m
    visibility : average
    description :
Also a diving site with many tunnels that can be visited. Unfortunately, at that time, weather was rather bad and diving conditions were not so goof (rough sea, rain).

  • rating : 2.0
    Esmeralda
    rating : 2.0
    depth : 20 m
    visibility : average
    description :
This dive was really a bad experience... Since the current was strong, we made a drift dive. After reaching the surface at the end of the dive, we had to swim in really big waves - and no boat was waiting for us. We had to wait 30 minutes to be picked up...
Underwater, some interesting canyons but a rather limited fauna. We saw a stingray and a turtle at the beginning of the dive.

  • rating : 1.0
    San Pedro Cut
    rating : 1.0
    depth : 25 m
    visibility : bad
    description :
No interest: only few things to see one stingray, a large barracuda and a huge crab), the reef has no special feature and the visibility was low. You won't miss it.
